Shauna Niequist calls us to see the beauty, hope, and dimension in our ordinary days through the life-giving practice of celebration. Cold Tangerines is beautiful narration of Shauna's journey as a young writer, wife, and mom making peace with herself and crafting a life that celebrates the extraordinary moments hidden in the everyday. Throughout each story echoes the heartbeat message that the normal, daily life ticking by on our streets and sidewalks, at our dinner tables and in our late-night talks--is the most precious thing any of us will ever experience. With her signature warmth and vulnerable storytelling, Shauna offers a feast of thoughtful reflections on the small moments that make up the human experience, the spiritual life, and things that seem ordinary but just might be sacred after all. She invites us into a new way of living with the awareness of God's movement gracing every part of our day. Both a voice of challenge and song of comfort, this gallery of celebration encourages us to turn our attention to the marvelous life happening right under our noses. Join Shauna in this heartfelt and hopeful call upward to a new way of being, where there's room to breathe, to rest, to break down, and break through to the best possible life.

Flavonoids in the Living System Book in PDF, Epub and Kindle
The presence of contaminant flavonoids in vitamin C preparations from citrus fruits initially led Szent-Gyorgyi and his collaborators to suggest that a flavonoid compound, with biological activity for the prevention of capillary fragility, was vitamin P. Later re search, although not disproving biological activity, discontinued the use of the vitamin classification for these compounds. However, the ubiquitous distribution of flavonoids in living organisms, and the continued discovery of various activity in biological systems makes these compounds targets of wide ranging investigation. This volume is primarily based on a Symposium on Flavonoids and related com pounds held during the 212th National Meeting of the American Chemical Society held in Orlando, Florida on August 28-29, 1996 under the sponsorship of the Division of Agricul tural and Food Chemistry. While the book is not intended to be a comprehensive volume on flavonoid research, the papers provide various approaches to exploring the biological functions of flavonoids in plants and animals, their chemical modifications for enhanced activity, some analytical techniques, as well as their use in food classification. A signifi cant portion is devoted to medicinal implications of these compounds. The organizers would like to express their appreciation to Tropicana Products, Inc., Bradenton, Florida, Coca-Cola Foods Division, Plymouth, Florida and the American Chemical Society's Division of Agricultural and Food Chemistry for financial support. Of course, the book could not be produced without the authors, whose cooperation and pa tience is greatly appreciated.

Essential Oils Book in PDF, Epub and Kindle
Essential Oils: Contact Allergy and Chemical Composition provides a full review of contact allergy to essential oils along with detailed analyses of the chemical composition of essential oils known to cause contact allergy. In addition to literature data, this book presents the results of nearly 6,400 previously unpublished sample analyses, by far the largest set of essential oils analyses ever reported in a single source of scientific literature. Covering 91 essential oils and two absolutes, the book presents an alphabetical list of all 4,350 ingredients that have been identified in them, a list of chemicals known to cause contact allergy and allergic contact dermatitis, and tabular indications of the ingredients that can be found in each essential oil. The book discusses contact allergy and allergic contact dermatitis for each of the oils and absolutes, sometimes able to provide only one or two reports but drawing upon considerable amounts of literature in other cases, such as with tea tree oil, ylang-ylang oil, lavender oil, rose oil, turpentine oil, jasmine absolute, and sandalwood oil. While limited information on the main components and their concentrations would be enough for most dermatologists, this book gives extensive coverage not only to improve levels of medical knowledge and quality of patient care, but also for the benefit of professionals beyond clinical study and practice, such as chemists in the perfume and cosmetics industries, perfumers, academic scientists working with essential oils and fragrances, aromatherapists, legislators, and those involved in the production, sale, and acquisition of essential oils.

The Wisdom of the Chinese Kitchen Book in PDF, Epub and Kindle
The Wisdom of the Chinese Kitchen, with its 150 recipes culled from a lifetime of family meals and culinary instruction, is much more than a cookbook. It is a daughter's tribute -- a collection of personal memories of the philosophy and superstitions behind culinary traditions that have been passed down through her Cantonese family, in which each ingredient has its own singular importance, the preparation of a meal is part of the joy of life, and the proper creation of a dish can have a favorable influence on health and good fortune. Each chapter begins with its own engaging story, offering insight into the Chinese beliefs that surround life-enhancing and spiritually calming meals. In addition, personal family photographs illustrate these stories and capture the spirit of China before the Revolution, when Young's family lived in Canton, Shanghai, and Hong Kong. The first part, "Mastering the Fundamentals," provides instruction on the arts of steaming and stir-frying; the preparation of rice, panfried, and braised dishes; the proper selection of produce; and the fine arts of chopping and slicing. Part Two, "The Art of Celebration," concentrates on the more elaborate, complex, and meaningful dishes -- such as Shark's Fin Soup and West Lake Duck -- that are usually made with rare ingredients, and sweets such as Water Chestnut Cake and Sesame Balls. The final part, "Achieving Yin-Yang Harmony," explores the many Chinese beliefs about the healing properties of ginseng, gingko nuts, soybeans, dong quai, and the many vegetable and fruit soup preparations that balance and nourish the body. The stories and recipes combine to demonstrate the range of Cantonese cooking, from rich flavors and honored combinations to an overall appreciation of health, well-being, and prosperity. In addition to the recipes, Young provides a complete glossary of dried herbs, spices, and fresh produce, accompanied by identifying photos and tips on where to purchase them. Unique traditional dishes, such as Savory Rice Tamales and Shrimp Dumplings, are also illustrated step by step, making the book easy to use. The central full-color photo section captures details of New Year's dishes and the Chinese home decorated in celebration, reminding one that these time-honored traditions live on, and the meals and their creation are connections to the past.

The Origins of Dislike Book in PDF, Epub and Kindle
'Strategic thinking for a writer articulates itself as dislike and as allegiance.' In this wonderfully rich and diverse collection of essays, Amit Chaudhuri explores the way in which writers understand and promote their own work in antithesis to writers and movements that have gone before. Chaudhuri's criticism disproves and questions several assumptions—that a serious and original artist cannot think critically in a way that matters; that criticism can't be imaginative, and creative work contain radical argumentation; that a writer reflecting on their own position and practice cannot be more than a testimony of their work, but open up how we think of literary history and reading. Illuminating new ways of thinking about Western and non-Western traditions, prejudices, and preconceptions, Chaudhuri shows us again that he takes nothing as a given: literary tradition, the prevalent definitions of writing and culture; and the way the market determines the way culture and language express themselves. He asks us to look again at what we mean by the modern, and how it might be possible to think of the literary today.

Mrs Beeton's Jam-making and Preserves Book in PDF, Epub and Kindle
This useful book of recipes from the 1920s includes 400 recipes for jam, marmalade, jelly, pickles, chutneys, and wines. It also provides detailed guidance on all aspects of preserving, bottling, sterilising, drying and crystallising fruits. The recipes are based on those by Mrs Beeton (including the now famous carrot jam) and they have been updated to include advances in techniques that were common in the early twentieth century. Familiar recipes are included alongside more exotic preserves like Harvey Sauce, Cucumber Ketchup, Hawthorn Liqueur and Maidenhair Syrup, making this an entertaining and exciting preserving adventure!Mrs Beeton's Jam-making and Preserves provides a fascinating insight into skills and methods that were in use before the invention of the food processor and electric hob, and before the presence of a refrigerator in every home. Among other methods, jars of jam are sealed with paper brushed with the white of an egg and some vegetable preserves are topped with clarified mutton fat to create an air-tight seal, the preparation of some ingredients takes many days, and the quantities of sugar, for example, many surprise the modern jam maker. However, all these recipes can be adapted to suit modern tastes and techniques in jam making and to take advantage of modern technology. Though perhaps not for the beginner, this book offers a wealth of preserving challenges for the confident cook. From recipes for ingredients not commonly used today to unusual combinations and preserves that, quite frankly, sound disgusting and/or positively dangerous (have a look at the Mustapha Ketchup recipe - try at your own risk!), this collation is an enjoyable exploration of the history of preserving and a rare opportunity to experience the tastes that a previous generation enjoyed.
