ROAN I’d had a plan twenty years ago, serve my eight years in the Marines, college, come home and join the family business. Then it all changed and I became a Marine Raider. Raw from my last year long assignment in hell, I was grateful to retire after twenty years. Now here I am, damn near forty, retired, no degree with my family’s business hanging on by a thread and everybody I love scattered to the four winds. What in the hell am I going to do? Coming back to Jasper Creek and working with my dad and brothers had always been my dream. LISA Who’s the new guy? Scratch that, who’s the new man? And who does he think he is? Roan Thatcher. What kind of name is that anyway? How dare he come into my town and think he can take over. Fine, the business hasn’t been running perfectly, but considering I’ve been taking care of things single-handedly, for almost a year, it’s been going pretty damn good. And that’s even with some beyond stupid vandal/stalker trying to put me out of business! Roan better stay out of my way or there’s going to be trouble. Big trouble.

Geeky loner Connor Lewis arrives in Paris on a scholarship for his last year of high school. It seems everyone he meets in the city has secrets — the military brats who befriend him on the first day of class, the young tattoo artist and her menacing dog who make up his host family, and an enigmatic redhead who shows up in unexpected places. One night, things take a turn for the supernatural, forcing Connor to stop running and confront his own dark secret. “A superb series from start to finish that, like the best musical mashups, takes something old (werewolf mythology) and makes something completely fresh out of its source material.” — Charles de Lint, Fantasy & Science Fiction Magazine

The Biblical History of the Liberal, and of Conservatism Book in PDF, Epub and Kindle
The Biblical History of the Liberal and of the Conservatism came about through some discussion of the 2016 campaigns and the ways and means of the various parties in their attempt to be the winner in 2016. There was a noted difference in the way of those leaning to the leftward political spectrum and of those leaning to the right side. There was quite a bit said regarding these two main ways, and the idea came across to give note of the observations. How far back did we go in our discussions? A ways, and in a general way, we went back to Bible times. With some extra exploring on this subject, it was reckoned to go to the beginning, to the book of Genesis. Just in the first eleven chapters, there has been found in the entirety of the scriptures as you will read. Quite a bit has been noted in God’s Word regarding the liberal and the conservative. We have observed that many times, what happens in the secular world often plays out in regard to what the Bible has recorded regarding the subject of the liberal and conservative issues.

The old house near Hode’s Hill, Pennsylvania is a place for Madison Hewitt to start over—to put the trauma of her husband’s murder, and her subsequent breakdown, behind her. She isn’t bothered by a burial plot on the property, or the mysterious, sealed cistern in the basement. Not at first. Even the presence of cold spots and strange odors could be fabrications of her still troubled mind. But how to explain her slashed tires, or the ominous messages that grow ever more threatening? Convinced the answer lies in the past, Madison delves into the history of the home’s original owners, only to discover the origin of a powerful evil. An entity that may be connected to a series of gruesome attacks that have left police baffled. No matter where she turns—past or present—terror lingers just a step away, spurred on by a twisted obsession that can only be satisfied through death...

Redemption Songs Book in PDF, Epub and Kindle
The Dred Scott case is the most notorious example of slaves suing for freedom. Most examinations of the case focus on its notorious verdict, and the repercussions that the decision set off-especially the worsening of the sectional crisis that would eventually lead to the Civil War-were extreme. In conventional assessment, a slave losing a lawsuit against his master seems unremarkable. But in fact, that case was just one of many freedom suits brought by slaves in the antebellum period; an example of slaves working within the confines of the U.S. legal system (and defying their masters in the process) in an attempt to win the ultimate prize: their freedom. And until Dred Scott, the St. Louis courts adhered to the rule of law to serve justice by recognizing the legal rights of the least well-off. For over a decade, legal scholar Lea VanderVelde has been building and examining a collection of more than 300 newly discovered freedom suits in St. Louis. In Redemption Songs, VanderVelde describes twelve of these never-before analyzed cases in close detail. Through these remarkable accounts, she takes readers beyond the narrative of the Dred Scott case to weave a diverse tapestry of freedom suits and slave lives on the frontier. By grounding this research in St. Louis, a city defined by the Antebellum frontier, VanderVelde reveals the unique circumstances surrounding the institution of slavery in westward expansion. Her investigation shows the enormous degree of variation among the individual litigants in the lives that lead to their decision to file suit for freedom. Although Dred Scott's loss is the most widely remembered, over 100 of the 300 St. Louis cases that went to court resulted in the plaintiff's emancipation. Beyond the successful outcomes, the very existence of these freedom suits helped to reshape the parameters of American slavery in the nation's expansion. Thanks to VanderVelde's thorough and original research, we can hear for the first time the vivid stories of a seemingly powerless group who chose to use a legal system that was so often arrayed against them in their fight for freedom from slavery.

The Ranch on the Cariboo Book in PDF, Epub and Kindle
"Alan Fry was just twelve years old when he became a cowboy on the Fry Homestead. It was the summer of 1943 and most of the work force was at war. The adults who stayed behind were left with the hard labour, and it was mainly the children who had to gather the harvest. This fast-paced, true story describes the joys and hardship of small-scale ranching in the Cariboo country of central British Columbia during the 1940s. Alan tells the stories of driving cattle, hunting bear, working in the fields and the barns, and reminiscences of the colourful characters that make up his lively world."--Back cover.

The Hour Before Dawn Book in PDF, Epub and Kindle
‘She had given her husband four children, had bared her body and soul to him... why did he want to remarry? Today, what made him dress in a new silk kurta, become a bridegroom once again, and leave on elephant-back to take another woman as his wife?’ When Menoka’s dissolute husband Mohikanto takes a second wife she is devastated by the heedless manner in which he squanders her unquestioning loyalty. But after the initial anguish she finds new strength – in her womanhood when she embraces a tender but illicit relationship with a village outcast; in her role as a fiercely protective mother, and, eventually, in a compassionate humanity towards her frail and battered co-wife and needy stepchildren. The story also poignantly explores Menoka’s troubled but ultimately redemptive relationship with Indro, her firstborn son, who is unwittingly exposed to a bewildering world of adult complexities and feels compelled to leave the village.

The Vine That Ate the South Book in PDF, Epub and Kindle
In a forgotten corner of western Kentucky lies a haunted forest referred to locally as "The Deadening," where vampire cults roam wild and time is immaterial. Our protagonist and his accomplice—the one and only, Carver Canute—set out down the Old Spur Line in search of the legendary Kudzu House, where an old couple is purported to have been swallowed whole by a hungry vine. Their quest leads them face to face with albino panthers, Great Dane-riding girls, protective property owners, and just about every American folk-demon ever, while forcing the protagonist to finally take stock of his relationship with his father and the man's mysterious disappearance. The Vine That Ate the South is a mesmerizing fantasia where Wilkes ambitiously grapples with the contradictions of the contemporary American South while subversively considering how well we know our own family and friends.

Vile Bodies Book in PDF, Epub and Kindle
"A wickedly witty and iridescent novel" (Time) from one of England's greatest satirists takes aim at the generation of Bright Young Things that dominated London high society in the 1920s. In the years following the First World War a new generation emerged, wistful and vulnerable beneath the glitter. The Bright Young Things of 1920s London, with their paradoxical mix of innocence and sophistication, exercised their inventive minds and vile bodies in every kind of capricious escapade. In these pages a vivid assortment of characters, among them the struggling writer Adam Fenwick-Symes and the glamorous, aristocratic Nina Blount, hunt fast and furiously for ever greater sensations and the hedonistic fulfillment of their desires. Evelyn Waugh's acidly funny satire reveals the darkness and vulnerability beneath the sparkling surface of the high life.
