Up From Slavery Book in PDF, Epub and Kindle

For those interested in the history of slavery and the American Civil War, 'Up from Slavery' is the autobiography from American eudcator Booker T. Washington in which he describes his experiences of living as an enslaved child during the Civil War. Washington overcame many obstacles to get an education and throughout his autobiography, he gratefully reflects on the help of his teachers and philanthropists who helped educate Black and Native Americans. The autobiography was a best seller; much to do with its honest and historically significant depiction of the struggles that Washington faced. If you are eager to know more about the history of slavery, Sojourner Truth's 'Narrative of Sojourner Truth' will provide great insight into being a slave in the North. Booker T. Washington was born into slavery in Virginia in 1856. He is regarded as one of the foremost African American leaders of the late 19th century, and founded the Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute in 1881. He became a teacher after the Civil War, and was also a political adviser and writer. Washington's mother, Jane, worked as a cook for a plantation owner and his father was an unknown white man, most likely from a nearby plantation. From a young age, Washington worked carrying sacks of grain to the plantations mill. Despite the sacks weighing around 100-pounds and being too heavy for a young boy, he was often beaten for not working to a high enough standard. After the Civil War, Washington and his mother moved to West Virginia, where she married a freedman. The family was very poor, and nine-year-old Washington went to work in the nearby salt furnaces instead of going to school. He then worked as a houseboy for the wife of a local coal mine owner. She recognised his desire for education and allowed him to go to school for an hour a day during the winter months. He died in November, 1915, at the age of 59, of congestive heart failure.

Booker T. Washington - Up from Slavery Book in PDF, Epub and Kindle

"The early years of my life, which were spent in the little cabin, were not very different from those of thousands of other slaves. My mother, of course, had little time in which to give attention to the training of her children during the day. She snatched a few moments for our care in the early morning before her work began, and at night after the day's work was done. One of my earliest recollections is that of my mother cooking a chicken late at night, and awakening her children for the purpose of feeding them. How or where she got it I do not know." "Up from Slavery" is a compelling and unforgettable autobiography. Booker T. Washington's tells about his rise from an extremely poor starving child in slavery to a world renowned leader and entrepreneur.

Up From Slavery Book in PDF, Epub and Kindle

Booker T. Washington wrote Up From Slavery as a central part of his strategy for the equality of both Native and African Americans. Its title is not just a description of his own life but an exhortation to the reader. His philosophy of self improvement through education resonated so strongly with the society of the time that even early reviews recommended the book as strongly for white people as for black, a judgment which still holds today. Slavery itself was actually a relatively short part of Washington's life, and the same is true of the book. The effects are fascinating however, for example the young Booker did not even know his own age. From the third chapter the focus is on Washington's rise from slavery, with a great focus on education and educational projects. Critics consider Washington to have been too timid in his search for equality and too full of egotism in the writing of this book, but there is no doubt that he was an important figure in the early civil rights movement and many have found inspiration in his words. No matter your race or class this is an inspirational text and should be considered required reading for any American, or indeed anyone with an interest in civil rights. Up from Slavery: The Autobiography of Booker T. Washington Book in PDF, Epub and Kindle

Nineteenth-century African American businessman, activist, and educator Booker Taliaferro Washington's Up from Slavery is one of the greatest American autobiographies ever written. Its mantras of black economic empowerment, land ownership, and self-help inspired generations of black leaders, including Marcus Garvey, Elijah Muhammad, Malcolm X, and Louis Farrakhan. In rags-to-riches fashion, Washington recounts his ascendance from early life as a mulatto slave in Virginia to a 34-year term as president of the influential, agriculturally based Tuskegee Institute in Alabama. From that position, Washington reigned as the most important leader of his people, with slogans like "cast down your buckets," which emphasized vocational merit rather than the academic and political excellence championed by his contemporary rival W.E.B. Du Bois. Though many considered him too accommodating to segregationists, Washington, as he said in his historic "Atlanta Compromise" speech of 1895, believed that "political agitation alone would not save [the Negro]," and that "property, industry, skill, intelligence, and character" would prove necessary to black Americans' success. The potency of his philosophies are alive today in the nationalist and conservative camps that compose the complex quilt of black American society.

Up From Slavery (1901) Book in PDF, Epub and Kindle

Up from Slavery is the 1901 autobiography of American educator Booker T. Washington (1856-1915). The book describes his personal experience of having to work to rise up from the position of a slave child during the Civil War, to the difficulties and obstacles he overcame to get an education at the new Hampton Institute, to his work establishing vocational schools-most notably the Tuskegee Institute in Alabama-to help black people and other disadvantaged minorities learn useful, marketable skills and work to pull themselves, as a race, up by the bootstraps. He reflects on the generosity of both teachers and philanthropists who helped in educating blacks and Native Americans. He describes his efforts to instill manners, breeding, health and a feeling of dignity to students. His educational philosophy stresses combining academic subjects with learning a trade (something which is reminiscent of the educational theories of John Ruskin). Washington explained that the integration of practical subjects is partly designed to reassure the white community as to the usefulness of educating black people.

Up from Slavery an Autobiography Book in PDF, Epub and Kindle

First published serially in the Christian newspaper "The Outlook" in 1900, "Up from Slavery" is the classic autobiography of one of the most controversial figures in American history, Booker T. Washington. "Up from Slavery," recounts Washington's rise from a Virginia tobacco farm slave to his long standing tenure as President of the famed Tuskegee Institute of Alabama. Booker T. Washington was instrumental in helping to establish schools specializing in vocational training for minorities in order to advance their position in society by obtaining marketable skills. Washington's message was one of the advancement of African Americans through economic empowerment for as he put it, "the individual who can do something that the world wants done will, in the end, make his way regardless of his race." While he has been described as an "accommodationist" and a "calculating realist," his message of self-empowerment has been a dramatic force in the fight for racial equality and shall forever be remembered in the annals of American history. The Cambridge Companion to the African American Slave Narrative Book in PDF, Epub and Kindle

The slave narrative has become a crucial genre within African American literary studies and an invaluable record of the experience and history of slavery in the United States. This Companion examines the slave narrative's relation to British and American abolitionism, Anglo-American literary traditions such as autobiography and sentimental literature, and the larger African American literary tradition. Special attention is paid to leading exponents of the genre such as Olaudah Equiano, Frederick Douglass and Harriet Jacobs, as well as many other, less well known examples. Further essays explore the rediscovery of the slave narrative and its subsequent critical reception, as well as the uses to which the genre is put by modern authors such as Toni Morrison. With its chronology and guide to further reading, the Companion provides both an easy entry point for students new to the subject and comprehensive coverage and original insights for scholars in the field.
